Lesson style

Since it is a small Japanese language school, the atmosphere is very cozy and relaxed. Due to the small-group instructions,
the teachers can accurately grasp the students’ level and help them to enhance their Japanese language ability efficiently.
When necessary, we use English as support for the beginners and the intermediate students so that they will have less stress.

Indirect Method・・・・

There are direct method and indirect method to teach a language. Direct method is instructional method using only Japanese, whereas the indirect method is instructional method using vehicular languages. In large scale Japanese language schools, they use direct method since there are students of various nationalities. We take the advantage of a small school and use English efficiently as a vehicular language to teach Japanese, especially for the beginners.

Cases often seen in other schools

They teach with only using Japanese, resulting students not to be able to understand the specific parts and making them easy to forget the contents.
We use English efficiently as vehicular language in classes. Language is not only about memorizing but also to understand why Japanese speakers use that specific grammatical expression. Therefore, it is very important to use English and explain to resolve the questions that they raise. Of course the amount of the English will decrease as students promote to advanced levels and will fully utilize the Japanese that was covered in the previous classes. In addition, to learn a second language is not just about learning the language itself but also learning the culture and the differences of customs. Therefore, we pick up Japanese customs and culture in class so that the students will be able to understand the different cultures more deeply.
Classes that focuses on grammar
In large scale Japanese language schools, majority of the learners try to get into Japanese universities or vocational college and the target is to pass the administration test. Therefore, they tend to focus too much on grammar. We teach Japanese not just from academic perspective, but also as a tool of communication so that the students can have a more comfortable stay in Japan. In order to make you stay in Japan with more convenience, we would like to help you resolve the questions that arise during your stay. Please share any problems you have experienced in Japan.
We invite Sado (tea ceremony), Kado (flower arrangement), Shodo (calligraphy) teachers and to provide experience of Japanese traditional cultures. In order encourage friendship and usage of the knowledge that they gained during the class, we plan Japanese language learning trip within Japan or Japanese food party. Let’s learn Japanese and Japanese custom at the same time!

Our Teachers

Masumu Goto

Masumu Goto

Masumu Goto is from Yokohama. After graduating from Hosei University in Japan (having obtained a Level 1 Middle School Social Studies teaching permit), he worked in Tokyo for around three years and moved to New Zealand. He volunteered at Sacred Heart High School in Napier City as a teacher of Japanese language and culture for one year. After returning to Japan, he taught English at a cram school. The following year, he enrolled at Massey University in New Zealand, and gained a postgraduate diploma of secondary school teaching (specialising in Japanese). After graduation, he worked as a full-time Japanese teacher at Edgewater College, a high school in Auckland. During his thirteen years of teaching there, he taught over 1500 students in total. In addition to managing classroom activities as a homeroom teacher, he was the coach of the gymnastics club. Throughout this time he also studied extramurally through the Massey University Graduate School, obtaining a “Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Administration”. He returned to Japan in 2010 after having lived in New Zealand for 16 years. He then worked at an international school in Tokyo for three years before founding KIWI Education Centre and opening the KIWI Japanese Class as a part of his education business.

Hobbies

Greetings

Welcome to the port of Yokohama. Our school is in front of JR line Kannai staion. Our school’s motto is “Care for the individual needs of the students”. A lesson that I learned during my 20 years as a teacher is that “teaching is learning”. By teaching Japanese, I still have students that I keep in touch with, and this is the greatest delight for me. This joy sustains me in my teaching, which is my true calling. While living in New Zealand, I myself had to overcome cultural differences and adjust to the local lifestyle. Having had this experience as a foreigner, I am able to stand in your shoes, and understand differences in the way that people of different cultures think. Through that experience, I hope to support you and make your stay in Japan as comfortable as possible.
